A Hybrid Distributed Coordination Function for Scalability and Inter-operability in Large-scale WLANs

چکیده
The distributed coordination function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is not scalable as the number of users on a network increases. We propose two new contention resolution schemes to reduce the number of collisions between a large number of contending mobile stations. The hybrid DCF (H-DCF) scheme splits contention resolution into two phases to improve scalability. Enhanced hybrid DCF (EHDCF) adds fairness with expect to mobile stations using the current IEEE 802.11 MAC and further improves the efficiency of contention resolution. Inter-operability with the IEEE 802.11 DCF is the major advance over previous work. We use an ns-2 simulator to simulate the performance of these new schemes with the IEEE 802.11 DCF. The results show that an improvement in network performance by up to 10∼30%.

IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN for Quality of Service
In this paper, a comprehensive overview of the new features of an upcoming new standard IEEE 802.11e to support Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is presented. We address Medium Access Control (MAC) enhancements found in the current 802.11e draft specification by emphasizing the differences from the legacy 802.11 standard. New mechanisms for QoS support, namely En...

This chapter introduces a new radio resource management technique based on distributed dynamic channel assignment, and sharing load among Access Points (AP). Deploying wireless LANs (WLAN) at large scale is mainly affected by reliability, availability, fairness, scalability, and performance. These parameters will be a concern for most of managers who wanted to deploy WLANs. In order to address ...

Large-scale deployment of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs) with a high density of access points (APs) has become commonplace due mainly to its potential for numerous benefits, such as ubiquitous service coverage, seamless handover, and improved link quality. However, the increased AP density can induce significant channel contention among neighboring cells, thus causing severe performance degr...

This paper presents and evaluates an Inter-Access Point Coordination protocol for dynamic channel selection in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. It addresses an open issue for the implementation of many distributed and centralized dynamic channel selection policies proposed to mitigate interference problems in Wireless LANs (WLANs). The presented protocol provides services to a wide range of policies that req...
